Electives
Each resident has 8 months of elective time during her or his training. Up to 2 additional months may be taken (1 month each from the 4-month EMG/neuromuscular and EEG/epilepsy rotations) as research time.
No 2 residents spend their elective time in the same manner. However, the most popular electives are neuropathology, neuro-ophthalmology, neuroradiology, and additional EMG or EEG.
Residents sometimes choose to do additional outpatient clinic work in 1 or more neurologic subspecialties including stroke, headache, rehabilitation, behavioral neurology, dementia, movement disorders, or neurodegenerative disorders.
Residents also may elect work in psychiatry, neuropsychology, or neurosurgery. Many residents spend part of their elective time doing research. On occasion, residents do their electives at sites away from UCSD.
