J D Bui's primary interest is in Magnetic Resonance (MR) research. His laboratory utilizes novel MR imaging and spectroscopy to study physiological responses in the healthy and diseased states, in part, to facilitate the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of neurological disorders.

His work has focused on NMR microscopy at high fields utilizing 600MHz (14.1 Tesla) and 750MHz (17.6 Tesla) magnets to probe cellular and tissue origins of the MR signal. In particular, he has applied non-monoexponential diffusion measurements to elucidate the mechanisms underlying diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) changes during acute ischemic stroke.

In addition, he has experience with small animal surgery and MR research at 4.7T and 11T. He uses cellular, tissue, animal, and human models in his work. He is an active member of the following:

Multimodal Imaging Laboratory
Institute for Engineering in Medicine
Rady Children's Neurology
UCSD Neurology
